State Legislative and Local Election Results Update: Dems Extend Gains

The news just keeps getting worse for Republicans as more ballots are counted. Democrats have now picked up three new state legislative seats in Frederick’s District 4. Lara Westdorp looks to have defeated incumbent Sen. Bill Folden, upping the already sizable Democratic majority in the Senate to 35 seats. This represents a gain of one seat for the Democrats as the Republican Caucus shrinks to 12.

Democrats Jerry Donald and Andrew Duck also appear set to win two House seats, bringing the net gain by the Dems in the House of Delegates to four seats. This is the only three-member delegate district that seems likely to have a split delegation. Based on the current count, 104 Democrats will face a minority caucus of 39 Republicans.

In local elections, Democrats no longer look set to lose a seat on the Talbot County Council, though they will remain in the minority. Democrats have now captured a majority of county legislative seats thanks to a gain of five seats. The Republican are down just three seats; Baltimore County now has two new councilmembers.

Gov. Wes Moore remains down from his 2022 showing over the same opponent, former Del. Dan Cox. In 2022, Moore beat Cox 64.5%-32.1% but currently leads 63.6%-32.1% (corrected) with more votes still to be counted. The two other statewide elected officials also suffered declines. Comptroller Brooke Lierman won 61.5%-38.3% in 2022 but now leads 59.8%-40.1%. Attorney General Anthony Brown won 64.9%-34.9% in 2022 but currently is winning 60.1%-39.8%. Still, all won in a rout.
