{"id":8008,"date":"2017-05-19T07:00:12","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T11:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=8008"},"modified":"2017-05-18T18:42:54","modified_gmt":"2017-05-18T22:42:54","slug":"gino-threatens-reznik","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=8008","title":{"rendered":"Gino Threatens Reznik"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Adam Pagnucco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a statement on the Facebook page of political blogger Ryan Miner, MCGEO President Gino Renne has vowed to defeat Delegate Kirill Reznik (D-39) in next year\u2019s election.\u00a0 In response to a post about Reznik\u2019s decision not to run for Congress, Renne wrote to Reznik:<\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks for your unproductive representation. I&#8217;m one of your constituents who believes you bring no value to our district&#8217;s representation in Annapolis. You were appointed to the seat which gave you the advantage of incumbency. This time around there are several quality candidates running for delegate in our district. I and many others intend to do whatever is necessary to unseat you. District 39 can do better and deserves better than you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You now have the benefit of more unsolicited intel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8009\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Gino-Kirill.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" height=\"822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Gino-Kirill.png 509w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Gino-Kirill-186x300.png 186w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>MCGEO once supported Reznik, giving him five contributions totaling $4,100 between 2007 and 2011.\u00a0 What is their problem with him now?\u00a0 Renne is not shy so we will probably find out!\u00a0 Perhaps his casus belli includes Reznik\u2019s support for Delegate Bill Frick\u2019s End the Monopoly bill, a piece of legislation so objectionable to Renne that he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethesdamagazine.com\/Bethesda-Beat\/2015\/Union-Calls-for-Ethics-Investigation-into-Delegate-Sponsoring-Liquor-Control-Bill\/\">famously promised to investigate the lifestyles of its supporters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Few interest group leaders make such open threats against incumbents.\u00a0 That\u2019s because defeating incumbents is difficult and MCGEO is no better at it than anyone else.\u00a0 In recent years, the incumbents MCGEO has tried to defeat include Council Member Phil Andrews (D-3) in 2006, Delegate Al Carr (D-18) in 2010, Senator Nancy King (D-39) in 2010, Board of Education member Mike Durso in 2010, Council Member Roger Berliner (D-1) in 2014 and Senator Rich Madaleno (D18) in 2014.\u00a0 All of these candidates won by double digits except Carr and King.\u00a0 Berliner won by 57 points even though his opponent\u2019s campaign was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethesdamagazine.com\/Bethesda-Beat\/2014\/Long-Time-Union-Official-Signs-On-To-Manage-Trachtenberg-rsquos-Campaign\/\">managed by MCGEO\u2019s former Executive Director<\/a>.\u00a0 MCGEO has supported two recent successful challengers to incumbents: Delegate Roger Manno (D-19) over Senator Mike Lenett and Hans Riemer over Council Member Duchy Trachtenberg (At-Large), both in 2010.\u00a0 Lenett lost in part because he blew himself up with horrible mailers such as <a href=\"http:\/\/maryland-politics.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/mike-lenetts-holocaust-mailer.html\">this one about the Holocaust<\/a>.\u00a0 Trachtenberg lost in part because she inexplicably hoarded $146,000 which could have been spent on campaign activity.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the problem with making threats of this kind: you have to follow through and win or you look weak.\u00a0 Reznik has none of the weaknesses\u00a0that sometimes result in incumbent losses in Montgomery County: he\u2019s not a Republican, he\u2019s not lazy and he doesn\u2019t have legions of enemies at home.\u00a0 It\u2019s also not clear that there are enough strong open seat candidates in District 39 to seriously threaten him.\u00a0 In fact, the smart move for the challengers is to court him and the other incumbents in hope of inclusion on their slate. \u00a0All of this is good for Kirill Reznik and not so good for Gino Renne.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adam Pagnucco.
