{"id":7754,"date":"2017-03-31T09:44:31","date_gmt":"2017-03-31T13:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=7754"},"modified":"2017-03-31T09:44:31","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T13:44:31","slug":"gino-stands-by-his-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=7754","title":{"rendered":"Gino Stands by His Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Adam Pagnucco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Council Member Marc Elrich held his kickoff event for the County Executive race in Bethesda this past Sunday. \u00a0One of his guests was Gino Renne, President of the Municipal and County Government Employees Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcgeo.org\/\">MCGEO<\/a>), the largest of MoCo&#8217;s non-education county employee unions. \u00a0The picture below says it all.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gino-Marc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1078\" height=\"722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gino-Marc.png 1078w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gino-Marc-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gino-Marc-768x514.png 768w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gino-Marc-1024x686.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1078px) 100vw, 1078px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by Kevin Gillogly. \u00a0More pictures available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mocokevin\/sets\/72157679451883362\">Kevin&#8217;s Flickr account<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elrich is a beloved figure by\u00a0many in the local labor movement. \u00a0He has had support from almost all of the area&#8217;s major labor organizations in his recent runs for office. \u00a0His lead sponsorship of two minimum wage bills has strengthened those relationships. \u00a0Of specific importance to MCGEO, Elrich was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/md-politics\/montgomery-council-citing-schools-needs-trims-raises-for-unionized-employees\/2016\/05\/16\/ecdc8428-1b5e-11e6-b6e0-c53b7ef63b45_story.html?utm_term=.0ffad055d4b5\">only Council Member to vote against cutting the union&#8217;s negotiated 8 percent raise in the last budget<\/a>, which also included a 9 percent property tax hike. \u00a0Additionally, Elrich is a strong defender of the county liquor monopoly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethesdamagazine.com\/Bethesda-Beat\/Web-2016\/Olazzo-Co-Owner-Bans-Council-Member-Over-DLC-Related-Comments\/\">famously accusing anti-monopoly restaurant owners of stealing and whining and then getting banned by one of them.<\/a>\u00a0 Protecting the monopoly is one of MCGEO&#8217;s highest priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Gino&#8217;s thumbs-up is not an official endorsement. \u00a0The union has to go through its process, including candidate interviews and questionnaires. \u00a0But the symbolism of the picture above is hard to miss. \u00a0Elrich could very well be labor&#8217;s pick for Executive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adam Pagnucco.
