With few local races going on in the state but a historic presidential election coming, how did Maryland counties do on turnout?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, let\u2019s look at the final turnout percentage by county in the 2020 presidential primary. Jurisdictions in green had races on the ballot for which unaffiliated people could vote while jurisdictions in blue did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"803\" height=\"882\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turnout-2020-Primary.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turnout-2020-Primary.png 803w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turnout-2020-Primary-273x300.png 273w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turnout-2020-Primary-768x844.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 803px) 100vw, 803px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not a coincidence that the bottom six counties had non-partisan races on the ballot for which unaffiliated voters could vote. Unaffiliated voters turn out at lower rates than party members, so when they are included in a voting population, the overall turnout rate is skewed downward. Baltimore City\u2019s status as number one is due to the fact that it elects its mayor, comptroller and city council members in presidential years, an unusual practice for local jurisdictions in Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Part Two, we will look at turnout by party.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adam Pagnucco.
