{"id":12307,"date":"2020-03-16T13:24:34","date_gmt":"2020-03-16T17:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=12307"},"modified":"2020-03-16T13:24:42","modified_gmt":"2020-03-16T17:24:42","slug":"elrich-recommends-tax-hike-council-says-no","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=12307","title":{"rendered":"Elrich Recommends Tax Hike, Council Says No"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Adam Pagnucco.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>County Executive Marc Elrich has proposed a 3.18 cent property tax hike in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomerycountymd.gov\/OMB\/Resources\/Files\/omb\/pdfs\/FY21\/psprec\/FY21_Recommended_Operating_Budget.pdf\">recommended Fiscal Year 2021 operating budget<\/a>, which was released today.  The budget does not state the exact size of the tax hike, but because <a href=\"http:\/\/dls.maryland.gov\/pubs\/prod\/NoPblTabPDF\/CountyAssessableBase.pdf\">state data indicates that the county collects almost $20 million per penny in real property taxes<\/a>, the tax hike is probably in the vicinity of $60 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon after receiving Elrich&#8217;s budget, the entire county council except for Council Member Tom Hucker released a statement opposing the tax hike.  Their statement is reprinted below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Statement by Montgomery County Council President Katz and Councilmembers Albornoz, Friedson, Glass, Jawando, Navarro, Rice and Riemer on the County Executive\u2019s Fiscal Year 2021 $5.9 Billion Operating Budget Recommendation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ROCKVILLE, Md., March 16, 2020\u2014Montgomery County Council\nPresident Sidney Katz and Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz, Andrew Friedson, Evan\nGlass, Will Jawando, Nancy Navarro, Craig Rice and Hans Riemer, made the\nfollowing statement on County Executive Marc Elrich\u2019s proposed 3.18 cent property\ntax increase in the fiscal year 2021 Recommended Operating Budget:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur focus in the midst of an unprecedented health\nemergency must be on bringing together businesses and residents, nonprofits and\ngovernment to address the immediate crisis we face. We also must provide as\nmuch certainty and support as we can for county residents who understandably\nfear what the economic realities of this global pandemic will have on their jobs,\nretirement savings, small businesses and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a time for cautious decision-making, not property\ntax increases.
