{"id":11590,"date":"2018-07-27T07:00:54","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T11:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=11590"},"modified":"2018-07-26T16:48:54","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T20:48:54","slug":"who-is-paying-for-rgas-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=11590","title":{"rendered":"Who is Paying for RGA\u2019s Campaign?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Adam Pagnucco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As we have previously written, the Republican Governors Association (RGA) has launched a TV and mail campaign promoting Governor Larry Hogan and attacking Democratic nominee Ben Jealous.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/527s\/527cmtedetail.php?ein=113655877&amp;cycle=2016\">RGA<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/527s\/index.php\">527<\/a>, not a PAC or a federal political committee regulated by the FEC, and since the Citizens United decision it is free to advocate for and against candidates.\u00a0 However, in Maryland, it is registered as an Independent Expenditure (IE) Committee and must disclose its contributions and expenditures.<\/p>\n<p>Below are the 21 entities (17 organizations and 4 individuals) who have contributed to RGA\u2019s Maryland IE account.\u00a0 They have combined to contribute $1,037,500 to the campaign.\u00a0 All but one (Gary Mangum of Bell Nursery) are from out of state.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Contributors.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Contributors.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1463\" height=\"701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Contributors.png 1463w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Contributors-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Contributors-768x368.png 768w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Contributors-1024x491.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1463px) 100vw, 1463px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The four healthcare and pharmaceutical companies contributed $300,000, which is interesting considering that Jealous is <a href=\"https:\/\/benjealous.com\/issues\/healthcare\/\">known for advocating single payer healthcare<\/a>.\u00a0 Indeed, one of RGA\u2019s TV ads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=11588\">slams Jealous\u2019s healthcare proposal<\/a> over its alleged cost.\u00a0 The $100,000 contribution by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datarecognitioncorp.com\/Pages\/default.aspx\">student testing firm<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datarecognitioncorp.com\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Data Recognition Corporation<\/a> is also noteworthy.\u00a0 Is it seeking contracts in Maryland?<\/p>\n<p>One more item from the IE filings stands out: the vendors collecting its money are all based out of state.\u00a0 Are there no consultants based in Maryland who are capable of doing political work?\u00a0\u00a0So far, the IE has spent $1,648,663 on TV, online ads, mail and consulting fees.\u00a0 Compare that to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=11566\">$2.9 million<\/a>\u00a0raised by Jealous&#8217;s campaign for the entire cycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Vendors.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Vendors.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1472\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Vendors.png 1472w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Vendors-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Vendors-768x220.png 768w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RGA-Vendors-1024x293.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1472px) 100vw, 1472px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>RGA\u2019s last IE report was dated July 11.\u00a0 If the campaign continues, there will be more reports.\u00a0 Who knows how much they will spend by the time they are done?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adam Pagnucco.
