{"id":10861,"date":"2018-06-07T16:00:01","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T20:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=10861"},"modified":"2018-06-07T11:30:28","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:30:28","slug":"is-this-the-most-expensive-facebook-ad-in-moco-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=10861","title":{"rendered":"Is This the Most Expensive Facebook Ad in MoCo Politics?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Adam Pagnucco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>County Executive candidate David Blair wants you to know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/david-blair-for-montgomery-county-executive\/2018\/05\/12\/fcea66a6-5558-11e8-9c91-7dab596e8252_story.html?utm_term=.97e7a43d659e\">the Washington Post has endorsed him.<\/a>\u00a0 Wait, that doesn&#8217;t do it justice.\u00a0 He really, REALLY wants you to know that.\u00a0 Why do we say so?\u00a0 Because he may have purchased the most expensive Facebook ad in the history of MoCo politics to publicize it.<\/p>\n<p>Most Facebook ads from state and local candidates cost less than a hundred bucks and run for a few days.\u00a0 The more you pay, the bigger the audience, but there is considerable variability in exposure and targeting.\u00a0 Still, a $50 ad on something good is a cheap way to get your name out there.\u00a0 If every exposure costs two cents (a VERY rough guesstimate with a lot of spread), that fifty bucks could get you on 2,500 feeds and draw a few dozen interactions.<\/p>\n<p>The exact stats on ad cost and engagements are available only to the advertisers.\u00a0 But Facebook has a political ad tracker that reports stats in ballpark ranges.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a report of an ad that Council Member George Leventhal is running on his hilarious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aPNwSbkKL1E&amp;t=5s\">Avengers-themed campaign video<\/a>.\u00a0 He spent up to $100 on the ad and it showed up on 5,000-10,000 feeds.\u00a0 (The actual people count will be less because some will have seen it more than once.)\u00a0 This is a very typical ad in MoCo politics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Leventhal-Facebook-Ad-Video.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10863\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Leventhal-Facebook-Ad-Video.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"911\" height=\"875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Leventhal-Facebook-Ad-Video.png 911w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Leventhal-Facebook-Ad-Video-300x288.png 300w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Leventhal-Facebook-Ad-Video-768x738.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 911px) 100vw, 911px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now here is the ad Blair is running on his Post endorsement.\u00a0 The report indicates that he spent between $10,000 and $50,000 and it showed up on more than a million feeds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Blair-Facebook-Ad-Washington-Post.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10862\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Blair-Facebook-Ad-Washington-Post.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"913\" height=\"873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Blair-Facebook-Ad-Washington-Post.png 913w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Blair-Facebook-Ad-Washington-Post-300x287.png 300w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Blair-Facebook-Ad-Washington-Post-768x734.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 913px) 100vw, 913px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By the standards of MoCo politics, that&#8217;s unheard of.\u00a0 Even David Trone rarely spends more than $1,000 on his Facebook ads.\u00a0 We know of one ad &#8211;
