{"id":10209,"date":"2018-04-25T07:00:38","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T11:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=10209"},"modified":"2018-04-24T15:39:22","modified_gmt":"2018-04-24T19:39:22","slug":"are-republicans-trying-to-help-aruna-miller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=10209","title":{"rendered":"Are Republicans Trying to Help Aruna Miller?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Adam Pagnucco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Much has been said about the Maryland Republican Party sending out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/dc-politics\/maryland-gop-attacks-democrat-running-to-replace-delaney-in-congress\/2018\/04\/06\/d9325262-39b7-11e8-acd5-35eac230e514_story.html?utm_term=.f7796a2c798a\">racist mailers<\/a> targeting Congressional District 6 candidate Aruna Miller.\u00a0 The standard interpretation of this seems to be that the GOP sees Miller as a strong candidate and is trying to keep her out of the general election.\u00a0 Indeed, the Washington Post editorial board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/the-gop-wallows-again-in-wedge-issues-and-fear\/2018\/04\/17\/78ab4248-41bc-11e8-ad8f-27a8c409298b_story.html?utm_term=.b6120a445bbd\">made that argument<\/a>.\u00a0 But what if the Republicans are actually trying to <em>help<\/em> Miller instead?<\/p>\n<p>The classic example of intervention in an opposing party\u2019s primary is Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill\u2019s promotion of conservative GOP Representative and eventual opponent Todd Akin.\u00a0 McCaskill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2015\/08\/todd-akin-missouri-claire-mccaskill-2012-121262\">spent $1.7 million<\/a> on ads accusing Akin of being \u201ctoo conservative\u201d during his GOP primary, helping boost him past the rest of the field.\u00a0 And that\u2019s not all \u2013 when Akin pulled a successful TV ad in favor of one that flopped, McCaskill schemed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/news\/home\/five-things-learned-claire-mccaskills-new-book\">have her pollster contact Akin\u2019s campaign<\/a> to persuade him to re-run the high-performing ad.\u00a0 Once Akin won his primary, McCaskill exploited his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/20\/us\/politics\/todd-akin-provokes-ire-with-legitimate-rape-comment.html?mtrref=www.google.com&amp;gwh=CD07C001251D1BF019D7A688EA241CCA&amp;gwt=pay\">weaknesses<\/a> to finish him off and get reelected.<\/p>\n<p><em>Two \u201canti-Akin\u201d ads by McCaskill and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Three of a kind, one and the same: Todd Akin\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ec4t_3vaBMc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Why do we bring this up?\u00a0 Some of the people who received the GOP mailers were female Democrats, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArunaMillerForCongress\/photos\/pcb.1852895764742070\/1852894841408829\/?type=3&amp;theater\">including Miller herself<\/a>.\u00a0 A few took to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArunaMillerForCongress\/posts\/1854281214603525\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arunamiller\/status\/982258877419864066\">Twitter<\/a> to complain about it.\u00a0 And if they didn\u2019t get them directly, they may have read about them in publications like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/md-politics\/why-are-maryland-republicans-targeting-one-democrat-in-a-crowded-primary\/2018\/04\/15\/91628604-3e86-11e8-974f-aacd97698cef_story.html?utm_term=.67bc6b3bd8de\">the Washington Post<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethesdamagazine.com\/Bethesda-Beat\/2018\/State-Republican-Party-Orchestrating-Ad-Campaign-Targeting-Aruna-Miller-in-Congressional-Race\/\">Bethesda Magazine<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiawest.com\/news\/global_indian\/maryland-republicans-target-congressional-candidate-aruna-miller-in-series-of\/article_68726ef8-3d00-11e8-9157-5bb730f5fe44.html\">India West<\/a>.\u00a0 How do you think they are going to react when they see a female Democratic candidate getting bashed in racist mail sent by Republicans?\u00a0 They are going to rally to Miller, of course, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArunaMillerForCongress\/posts\/1864359880262325\">that\u2019s what happened on social media<\/a>.\u00a0 Maybe that\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n<p><em>Miller uses GOP racism to motivate her supporters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Miller-GOP-racism.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10212\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Miller-GOP-racism.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Miller-GOP-racism.png 498w, https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Miller-GOP-racism-233x300.png 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aruna Miller is doing really well in this campaign.\u00a0 She is raising lots of money, doing well at forums, attracting great endorsements from the Sierra Club and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethesdamagazine.com\/Bethesda-Beat\/2018\/Aruna-Miller-Receives-National-Teachers-Union-Endorsement\/\">the teachers<\/a> and is the most prominent woman running in a primary electorate that is roughly 60% female.\u00a0 But look at this race from the standpoint of the GOP.\u00a0 They know David Trone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theseventhstate.com\/?p=6708\">won an absolute majority of the vote in rural Frederick and Carroll Counties<\/a> in the CD8 primary \u2013 the kind of areas that Republicans need to dominate in the sixth district.\u00a0 They know Trone could spend $10 million in a general election, something no other Democrat can do, and that would free up national Democratic money to go to other Congressional districts around the country.\u00a0 Most of all, Trone looks more like incumbent Congressman John Delaney than any other candidate \u2013 a center-left businessman who says he has created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnkdelaney.com\/about\/\">thousands<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidtrone.com\/meet-david-trone\/\">jobs<\/a>.\u00a0 The GOP knows that kind of candidate can win in this district.\u00a0 Why would they want another one like Delaney?\u00a0 And if they don\u2019t, why not help a rival win?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe we\u2019re reading too much into this but we don\u2019t think the GOP is stupid.\u00a0 This kind of tactic can work.\u00a0 Just ask Claire McCaskill!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adam Pagnucco.
